How to Build an AI Newsjacking Agent with ChatGPT Dots (No VPS, No Code)
LinkedIn is always late. Whatever is trending on X this week shows up in LinkedIn feeds two, three, sometimes six weeks later. The person who posts about it first gets the reach. Everyone after them gets the leftovers.
That is the whole game behind newsjacking: spot the news before your audience does, explain why it matters to them, and add your own take.
Until a few weeks ago, automating this meant renting a VPS, installing an open-source agent like OpenClaw, creating a Telegram bot, pasting tokens and allowlisting user IDs. It works, but it is 20 minutes of setup and one more server to babysit.
ChatGPT Dots changed that. A Dot is an always-on agent that lives inside ChatGPT, runs on its own cloud computer, and keeps working after you close your laptop. In this ChatGPT Dots tutorial, I will show you how to turn one into a newsjacking agent that delivers LinkedIn post ideas or full drafts every weekday morning. No server. No code.
What is a ChatGPT Dot?
OpenAI launched Dots on September 29, 2026. Three things make a Dot different from a normal ChatGPT chat:
- It runs in the background. A Dot has its own cloud computer and browser, so it can research while you sleep.
- It remembers the job. The goal, memory and connected apps stay with it between sessions. You set it up once.
- It works on a schedule. A Dot can run recurring checks on its own and message you when the work is done or when it needs a decision.
Who can get one right now: ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise workspaces (beta, an admin has to turn it on). Pro and Business Premium include one Dot. Free, Go, Plus and standard Business seats are not included, and Pro users in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland are excluded for now.
On Plus? Skip to the ChatGPT Tasks section below. You can get 80% of this setup on your plan.
Why newsjacking works on LinkedIn
I split LinkedIn content into three jobs:
- Reach content brings new people to your profile.
- Authority content shows your frameworks and proves you know what you are talking about.
- Conversion content turns followers into subscribers, calls and customers.
Newsjacking is reach content. You do not need a famous name or a big logo to make it work, because people care about news that affects their job or their business, no matter who delivers it.
But a news recap on its own is forgettable. The post that performs does three things:
- Reports the news early, with a link to the source
- Explains why it matters to your specific audience
- Adds your take: what you would do, what you disagree with, what happens next
The agent handles the first part. You handle the third. That split is the point.
What you need
- ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium (or Enterprise with Dots enabled)
- The ChatGPT desktop app or ChatGPT in a desktop browser. You cannot create a Dot on mobile.
- Optional: Slack, if you want the briefing delivered there instead of ChatGPT
- 10 minutes
Step-by-step: build your newsjacking Dot
Step 1: Create the Dot
Open ChatGPT on desktop and select Create your dot. Give it a name and an avatar. Something like "News Desk" works. The handle becomes @news-desk-dot.
If you are on Pro and do not see the option, the rollout is still going. Check back in a few days.
Step 2: Write the goal
This is the most important step. A vague goal ("find me news") gets vague results. A good goal answers three questions in this order:
- What does the output look like?
- Where should it look?
- What is it allowed to do?
Use one of the two goal prompts in the next section. Start with Ideas mode for the first week so you can judge the quality of the stories it picks.
Step 3: Set the rules
Dots let you choose how much freedom each type of action gets: act without asking, act when you say so, ask first, or hand it off to you.
For a newsjacking agent, keep it simple:
- Reading and researching: take action without asking
- Drafting: take action without asking
- Posting anywhere: hand off to you. Always.
Computer access is off by default. You do not need it for this job. Web research is enough.
Step 4: Set the schedule
Tell the Dot when to run:
Run this every weekday at 6:00 AM Central. Deliver the briefing as one message.
You can check and edit recurring work under Scheduled in the Dot's profile, and review what it actually did under Activity.
Step 5: Choose where it reaches you
By default the Dot messages you in ChatGPT, which also shows up on your phone through the ChatGPT app. If your team lives in Slack, add Slack from the Dot's profile and have the briefing land in a private channel. That makes it easy for a ghostwriter or editor to pick stories too.
Step 6: Test it once, then leave it
Before you trust the schedule, ask it to run now:
Run today's briefing now so I can check the format.
Read the stories. If they are too broad, tighten the sources. If they are old, tell it the 24-hour rule is strict. Two or three rounds of feedback in the first week is normal. After that it runs on its own.
Two goal prompts you can copy
Swap the bracketed parts for your niche.
Prompt 1: Ideas mode
Use this if you want the stories and angles but prefer to write the post yourself.
You are my news desk for LinkedIn. My audience is [who: e.g. B2B SaaS founders and marketing leads]. I post about [topics: e.g. AI agents, content marketing, SEO].
Every weekday at 6:00 AM Central, send me one briefing with the 5 most important stories from the last 24 hours in my topics.
Where to look: official company blogs and changelogs, major tech news sites, and the most-engaged posts on X and Reddit from people in my space. Prefer primary sources over recaps.
For each story give me:
1. Headline in plain English (one line)
2. Source link
3. What happened (2 sentences max)
4. Why my audience should care (1 sentence, specific to them)
5. Two hook options for a LinkedIn post (under 15 words each)
6. A suggested angle: the opinion or prediction I could add
Rules:
- Only stories from the last 24 hours. If nothing big happened, send 3 instead of padding to 5.
- Skip anything my audience saw last week.
- Rank the list by how likely it is to start a discussion, not by how big the company is.
- Never post anything anywhere. Only send the briefing to me.
Prompt 2: Draft mode
Use this if you want ready-to-edit LinkedIn drafts.
Same job, same schedule and sources as my news desk briefing, but pick the top 2 stories and write a LinkedIn draft for each.
Each draft follows this structure:
1. Hook: one line, under 15 words. Give me 2 options.
2. Context: what happened, in 2-3 short lines. Include the number or detail that makes it surprising.
3. My take: a clear opinion on what this means for [my audience]. Write it as a position someone could disagree with.
4. Takeaway: one thing the reader should do or watch for.
5. Close: one open question that invites people to argue or share their experience.
Writing rules:
- Short lines. One idea per line. White space between blocks.
- No hashtags. No emojis. No "In today's fast-paced world."
- Write like a person talking, not a press release.
- 120-200 words per draft.
- Put the source link under the draft, not inside it.
Never post anything. Send the drafts to me for editing.
OpenClaw vs ChatGPT Dots vs ChatGPT Tasks
| OpenClaw (self-hosted) | ChatGPT Dots | ChatGPT Tasks | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup | VPS + Telegram bot, about 20 min | About 10 min, no code | About 2 min |
| Hosting | You rent and run a server | OpenAI runs it | OpenAI runs it |
| Plan needed | VPS plan + LLM access | Pro, Business Premium, Enterprise beta | Paid ChatGPT plans |
| Delivery | Telegram, WhatsApp | ChatGPT, Slack, Teams (alpha) | ChatGPT notification |
| Memory between runs | Yes | Yes | Limited |
| Can use your apps | Whatever you wire up | 4,000+ supported apps | Search and browsing |
| Best for | Builders who want full control | Creators who want it to just run | Plus users, simple briefings |
My take: if you already run OpenClaw and like it, keep it. If you have never touched a server, Dots is the shorter path. If you are on Plus, start with Tasks and upgrade only when the briefing becomes part of your weekly content system.
On Plus? Do it with ChatGPT Tasks
Scheduled Tasks run a prompt at a set time, browse the web if needed, and send you the result. They do not have a Dot's persistent computer or app connections, but for a morning news briefing that is often enough.
- Open a new chat and paste Prompt 1 above.
- Add at the end: "Schedule this as a task every weekday at 6:00 AM Central."
- Confirm the task when ChatGPT shows it.
You will get the briefing as a notification each morning. Draft mode works too, but expect to edit more.
5 more ChatGPT Dots use cases for creators
Once your news desk runs, the same pattern works for other content jobs:
- Competitor watch. Track the 10 creators in your niche and flag any post that does 3x their usual engagement, with a note on why it worked.
- Comment reply drafts. Read new comments on your latest post each evening and draft replies for you to approve.
- Weekly performance recap. Every Friday, summarize which posts drove profile views and followers, and what to repeat.
- Podcast to posts. When a new episode transcript lands in a folder, pull 5 clip moments and write a post for each.
- Outlier scan. Scan X and Reddit for posts in your topic that are blowing up and turn them into idea cards.
Keep each Dot job narrow. One clear output, one schedule, posting always handed back to you.
Before you hit post: edit the draft
The agent gets you to 70%. The last 30% is what makes it yours.
- Rewrite the hook in your own words. If you would not say it out loud, change it.
- Check the context against the source. Agents get numbers and dates wrong.
- Add your actual opinion. If the take could have been written by anyone, it is not a take.
- End with a real question. LinkedIn rewards dwell time and long comments. Give people something to disagree with.
You are not a news reporter. You are the person who tells your audience what the news means.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT Dots free? No. Dots are included with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium (one Dot each) and available as a beta in Enterprise workspaces. Free, Go and Plus plans do not include them.
Does ChatGPT Dots work in the EU or UK? Not on Pro yet. Pro users in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland are excluded at launch. Business Premium is available in supported ChatGPT regions.
Can a Dot post to LinkedIn for me? Do not let it. Set posting to "hand off to you" in Custom Rules. Newsjacking only works when you add your own take, and an auto-posted AI recap will hurt your reach more than help it.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Dots and Tasks? Tasks run a single prompt on a schedule. A Dot keeps a goal, memory, connected apps and its own computer between runs, and it can decide when to check back in.
How many Dots can I have? One at launch on Pro and Business Premium. OpenAI has said more are planned.
Can I create a Dot on my phone? No. Create it in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. You can read its messages on mobile.
