How to Build an Email List From Your Videos (and Nurture Viewers Into Customers)

Joon AhnSeptember 28, 20268 min read

Most founders who start posting video hit the same wall. The views come in. The followers grow. And then nothing happens.

That's because followers aren't an audience you own. You're renting them from the platform. One algorithm change and your reach drops, and you can't message the people who watched you last month.

An email list fixes that. Here's how to build one from your videos, step by step, and how to nurture those subscribers until some of them become customers.

Why Your Videos Need an Email List

Views measure attention. They don't measure relationships.

  • The platform owns the connection. Your followers see you only when the algorithm decides to show you.
  • Email is direct. A subscriber gets every email you send, in the inbox they check every day.
  • Email compounds. A viewer might forget a video by tomorrow. A subscriber hears from you every week until they're ready to buy.

Video is the best way to earn attention. Email is the best way to keep it. You need both.

Step 1: Create One Lead Magnet Tied to Your Videos

People won't join a list just because you asked. Give them something specific in return.

The best lead magnet for a video creator is the thing viewers already ask for in the comments. A few examples:

  • The prompts or templates you used in the video
  • A checklist that turns your tutorial into steps
  • A swipe file of examples you referenced
  • A short guide that goes deeper than the video could

Keep it to one lead magnet per video topic. For example, our Claude Code motion graphics kit packages the 16 prompts from one video into a single download.

Rule of thumb: if you can describe it in one sentence and someone could use it in under ten minutes, it's a good lead magnet.

Step 2: Build the Capture Path

This is the part most creators skip. The path from "watched a video" to "joined the list" needs to be short and obvious.

Put one call to action in every video

Pick one, not three:

  • Comment a keyword. "Comment MOTION and I'll send you the link." It boosts engagement and gives you a list of interested people to DM. It's the call to action on our own motion graphics carousel.
  • Link in bio. Simple, but it adds a step.
  • Pinned comment or description link. Best on YouTube.
  • End card. Say it and show it on screen in the last few seconds.

Send them to a page you own

Don't link straight to a form. Link to a page on your own site that:

  1. Teaches something useful on its own. This is what ranks in Google and builds trust.
  2. Offers the lead magnet in exchange for an email address.

A page on your own domain works for you twice: once from your video traffic, and again from search.

Connect the form to your email tool

When someone signs up, three things should happen automatically:

  1. They get the lead magnet by email right away.
  2. They're tagged with the magnet they signed up for, so you know what they're interested in.
  3. They enter your welcome sequence.

We use Kit for this. Any email tool with tags and automations works.

Step 3: Write a 5-Email Nurture Sequence

A nurture sequence is a short series of emails that turns a new subscriber into someone who knows, likes and trusts you. Without one, most new subscribers forget why they signed up.

Here's a simple structure:

EmailWhenWhat it does
1. DeliveryRight awaySend the lead magnet. Say what to do with it first. Ask them to reply with one question.
2. Your storyDay 2Why you do this, and the problem you solve. Keep it short and honest.
3. Your best contentDay 4Link your two or three most useful videos or posts on this topic.
4. ProofDay 7One real case study or result, with the specifics.
5. The next stepDay 10A soft offer: a call, a service or a product. One clear link.

After that, move them to your regular newsletter, once a week or once every two weeks.

A few rules that make it work:

  • Write like a person, not a brand. Send from your name.
  • Ask for replies. Replies tell you what people need and help your emails reach the inbox.
  • Don't pitch in email one. Earn it first.
  • Keep every email to one idea and one link.

Step 4: Segment and Spot Your Hottest Leads

Not every subscriber is the same. Your email tool can tell you who's closest to buying.

  • Tag by lead magnet. Someone who downloaded your pricing template is further along than someone who grabbed a beginner checklist.
  • Watch clicks. A subscriber who clicks your case study and your booking link is a warm lead.
  • Watch replies. A reply is the strongest signal you'll get. Answer every one.

When someone shows those signals, that's when a personal follow-up or a call invite makes sense.

Step 5: Measure What Matters

Skip vanity numbers. Track these:

  • Subscribers per video: which topics actually grow your list
  • Welcome sequence open and click rates: whether people care about what you send
  • Replies: the best sign of real interest
  • Calls or sales from email: the number that pays for all of it

Then feed it back into your content. The topics that grow your list are the topics to make more videos about.

How This Fits Into a Video System

In our 22M views case study, the views became business because we tracked which specific people kept engaging, and those people eventually reached out to work with our client.

An email list makes that systematic. Instead of waiting for the right people to DM you, you capture them the first time they raise their hand, and you stay in their inbox until they're ready.

Video earns the attention. The list keeps it. The nurture sequence turns it into customers.

Common Mistakes

  • No call to action in the video. Attention with nowhere to go.
  • Too many calls to action. One per video.
  • A generic lead magnet. "Join my newsletter" isn't a reason. A specific template is.
  • No welcome email. The moment after signup is when people are paying the most attention.
  • Pitching on day one. Deliver value first, then offer.
  • Gating everything. Keep the how-to open so it ranks and builds trust. Gate the download.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many followers do I need before building an email list?

None. Start with your first video. The earlier you start capturing, the more of your audience you own.

What's the best email tool for creators and founders?

Pick one with tags and automations. We use Kit. What matters more is that you set up the welcome sequence, not which tool you pick.

What's a good lead magnet for a video?

The thing your viewers already ask for in the comments: the prompts, template, checklist or examples from the video.

How often should I email my list?

Send the welcome sequence over the first 10 days, then a regular newsletter once a week or every two weeks. Consistency matters more than frequency.

Should I gate my content behind an email?

Keep your how-to content open so it ranks and builds trust. Gate the downloadable resource, like the template or the full kit.
