Short-Form Video Editing with Astra + After Effects
Turn one raw talking-head clip into a branded short without manually building every layer in After Effects. Astra plans the visual story, After Effects renders it, and you approve the decisions that matter.
See the difference
The source and finished video use the same script, voice, and avatar. The edited version works because the screen develops with the argument: key words receive emphasis, abstract claims become visuals, comparisons appear side by side, and sound reinforces the important transitions.
Watch the walkthrough
Watch this together with the workflow below. The video shows the result; this guide gives you the repeatable operating system.
The four-step workflow
1. Prepare one editing project
Give Codex the materials it needs before asking it to edit:
- Raw video and transcript
- Brand colors, fonts, logos, and layout rules
- Two or three strong visual references
- After Effects templates and reusable components
- Existing footage, images, icons, and sound effects
Keep these files in one project so each approved decision can improve the next edit.
2. Map the visual beats
Ask Astra to analyze before it builds. The plan should connect each spoken beat to a visual, explain why it helps, and flag moments where the idea moves but the screen does not.
Analyze this short-form video and transcript.
Create a timeline table with timestamp, spoken cue, proposed visual, and reason. For each important beat, choose captions, a cutaway, a comparison, a number, a motion graphic, or an existing After Effects component.
Flag the three weakest visual moments. Use my brand guide and reusable assets first. Do not edit yet. Show me the plan for approval.
3. Render a 15-second preview
Do not begin with the full export. Approve the visual language on a small section first.
Use the approved visual plan to create a 15-second After Effects preview.
Follow the brand guide and existing templates. Keep the speaker readable. Make every visual change support the spoken idea. Avoid decorative effects that do not improve comprehension.
Show representative frames and the preview before rendering the full video.
Review it on your phone. Check caption size, pacing, safe zones, and whether each visual arrives at the right spoken cue.
4. Give timestamped feedback
Concrete notes are more useful than “make it more engaging.”
00:04-00:08: Replace the generic cards with the supplied product images.
00:09-00:12: Keep the captions, but slow the transition.
00:13-00:15: Show the comparison side by side instead of sequentially.
Keep everything else unchanged.
Build the reusable layer
Package the patterns you repeat most:
- Hook title and progress bar
- Number counters and step cards
- Before-and-after comparisons
- Prompt, terminal, phone, and browser frames
- Caption styles and safe zones
- CTA end cards, transitions, and sound cues
The first video requires decisions. The tenth should reuse them.
Update the files, not only the chat
After approval, separate one-off corrections from durable preferences. Save only the durable rules to the shared editing guide.
Review my approved feedback from this edit.
Separate one-off changes from reusable preferences. Update the shared editing guide with only the reusable rules for pacing, typography, captions, motion, audio, and visual patterns. Show me exactly what you plan to save before changing any project files.
This is where the system compounds. Your taste becomes project infrastructure instead of disappearing inside old conversations.
What stays human
You still own the hook, argument, proof, taste, brand standards, and final approval. Astra can analyze, build, revise, and remember. It still needs you to decide what the audience should understand and associate with your brand.
Quick checklist
- Add the raw clip, transcript, brand guide, and references
- Approve the timestamped visual plan
- Review a 15-second preview on your phone
- Give precise timestamped feedback
- Save reusable lessons and package one repeatable component
- Approve the full export
